1st Choice Town Car Service

Updated October 2026 · By the 1st Choice dispatch team, Sun Valley

Quick answerPlan to be at LAX 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international one, then add your drive. From most of the San Fernando Valley, that drive is 35–50 minutes late at night and 60–100 minutes in weekday rush hour. For a 10:00 a.m. domestic flight from Sherman Oaks or Van Nuys, leaving around 6:30 a.m. is a sensible target.

How early should you get to LAX before your flight?

The widely used guideline is 2 hours before a domestic departure and 3 hours before an international one. LAX itself tells travelers to check with their airline, because each carrier sets its own check-in and bag-drop deadlines.

Those deadlines are the real hard stop. Many airlines close bag drop about 45 minutes before a domestic flight and about 60 minutes before an international flight, and boarding doors typically close 15–20 minutes before departure. Miss bag drop by 2 minutes and you are rebooking, so confirm your airline’s exact cutoff the day before.

  • Carry-on only, with TSA PreCheck: 75–90 minutes can work on a domestic flight.
  • Checked bags or kids: stick with 2 hours domestic.
  • International, holidays, or a big group: 3 hours, plus 30 minutes on peak travel days.

How long is the drive from the San Fernando Valley to LAX?

Distance matters less than time of day. These are typical planning ranges, not guarantees; a crash or closure on the 405 can add 30 minutes or more on its own.

Sherman Oaks / Studio City17–2030–40 min60–90 min
Encino / Van Nuys19–2230–45 min60–90 min

Woodland Hills / Calabasas25–3035–50 min70–100 min

Check a live traffic app the night before and again when you wake up. If the 405 is showing red through the pass at 5:30 a.m., something has gone wrong and you should leave earlier.

What time of day is LAX traffic worst?

For the drive, the worst windows from the Valley are weekday mornings from about 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. and afternoons from about 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings are reliably bad in both directions.

Inside the airport, security lines tend to peak around 6:30–9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., and 8:00–11:00 p.m., according to published TSA wait-time analyses. Wait times are often around 15 minutes but can stretch past 25 at peak, and much longer on holiday weekends. The MyTSA app shows current waits by checkpoint.

The Valley-to-LAX route, freeway by freeway

The default route for nearly everyone in the Valley is the 405 south through the Sepulveda Pass, past the Getty Center and Westwood, to the Century Boulevard or La Tijera exit. From Sun Valley and the east Valley, most trips first take the 5 or the 170 to reach the 405 or the 101.

The Sepulveda Pass is the bottleneck: one stretch between the 101 interchange and Sunset Boulevard can decide your whole morning. When it jams, drivers from Burbank and the east Valley sometimes go the long way, the 5 or 101 to the 110, then the 105 west into the airport. It adds miles but can save 15–25 minutes when the pass is stopped.

The last mile is its own problem. The LAX Central Terminal Area is a one-way horseshoe, and with ongoing airport construction, LAX has been moving ground transportation loading areas, including relocating its limousine lot in September 2025. Budget 10–20 minutes from Century Boulevard to your terminal curb at busy times, and check flylax.com for current road alerts.

How to work out your exact departure time

  1. Start with the flight time

    Example: a 10:00 a.m. domestic flight from Terminal 7.

  2. Subtract the airport buffer

2 hours domestic, 3 international. Target curb arrival: 8:00 a.m.

  3. Subtract the drive at that hour

Leaving Van Nuys around 6:30 a.m. on a weekday means rush hour is building, so plan on about 75 minutes.

  4. Add a cushion

Take off another 15 minutes for loading bags and the terminal loop. Pickup time: about 6:30 a.m.

For a 7:00 a.m. flight, the same math lands around 4:00 a.m., and the drive is usually closer to 35–45 minutes because the freeways are still open.

Is it better to fly out of Burbank instead?

For many Valley travelers, Hollywood Burbank Airport is 10–20 minutes from home instead of an hour or more, and its smaller terminals usually move faster. The tradeoff is fewer nonstop routes and almost no long-haul international service. If your flight exists at both, Burbank is worth pricing.
